Chilly Westerlies to Bring a Little More Snow before Warming on Sunday

Summary

Showery westerlies will continue in the Aussie Alps for the next four days, with light snow overnight and early morning, and warmer daytime temperatures lifting snow levels to around 1700m. Victoria had a fresh dusting Friday, while New South Wales expects showers later in the day. Up to 5-15cm of snow may accumulate on upper slopes before warming reduces snowfall by Sunday and Monday.

Short Term Forecast

Friday to Sunday (20th to 22nd September)

Light snow showers moved over Victoria on Friday morning and New South Wales in the afternoon, with snow levels rising to around 1700m, and brisk west-to-northwest winds. On Saturday, snow will fall to low levels initially but rise to 1700m later in the morning, with strong winds in exposed areas. Sunday will bring more showery west-to-northwest winds, with snow at 1600-1700m early on, turning to rain as temperatures warm.

Monday & Tuesday (23rd & 24th September)

Victoria will have a cloudy day Monday with rain showers, while New South Wales will see partial cloud cover. Northwest winds will be strong but ease later. Tuesday will be dry, with strengthening warm northwest winds ahead of an approaching front.

Extended Forecast

The front is expected to bring heavy rain on Wednesday, followed by some snow late Wednesday or Thursday as a cold southerly change moves in. However, the front may reduce snowpack quality. Temperatures are likely to rise again as the weekend approaches.

Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
