Showery Westerly Flow to Bring Decent Accumulations to Upper Slopes

Summary

Strong northwest winds are expected today, but skies will remain clear. From Thursday to Sunday, cooler winds and a series of fronts will bring persistent showers to the Aussie Alps, with snow mostly above 1700m, accumulating 15-25cm. Lower elevations may also see a dusting each night. Perisher, now the only open resort, should benefit from these conditions.

Short Term Forecast

Wednesday (18th September)

Clear skies, but strong northwesterly winds are howling in exposed areas.

Thursday to Sunday (19th to 22nd September)

Snow showers will move over Victoria before dawn on Thursday and into New South Wales shortly after, turning to rain on lower slopes as snow levels rise to 1700m or higher, then lowering again in the evening as snowfall lightens. Strong westerly winds will make conditions challenging. Light snow showers continue on Friday and Saturday, turning wet at lower levels, with brisk west to northwest winds. Showers and winds ease by Sunday.

Extended Forecast

Next week, warm west-to-northwest winds are expected on Monday and Tuesday, with a potential storm bringing colder air and fresh snow on Wednesday and Thursday. Forecast details are uncertain, so we'll monitor conditions as the time approaches.

Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
