Late-week storm

Monday

It’s another bluebird, perfect day across Colorado. Have a great time outside!

Tuesday and Wednesday

Moisture from Hurricane Storm Paine will move from Baja toward Colorado.

Tuesday’s weather should stay dry for most of the state, though we’ll see more clouds and there could be afternoon, evening, or overnight showers as the moisture approaches.

These showers could stick around through Wednesday morning.

The southern mountains will likely see the most showers while the central and northern mountains may stay on the drier side.

Thursday and Friday

A strong and slow-moving storm will head toward Colorado from the west.

On Thursday, the storm’s main impact will be wind. Expect gusts between 30-50mph on exposed ridges and summits. There could be a few showers around, but for the most part, Thursday's main weather story will be wind, not precipitation.

Sometime between late Thursday night and the first half of Friday, a cold front will move across the state. This cold front will drop snow levels to 10,000 feet (ish) and should also bring a line of thunderstorms which will produce heavy rain at lower elevation and snow at higher elevation.

The thunderstorms on Friday morning will move through relatively quickly. Behind the front on Friday afternoon and evening, I think we’ll see a mix of clouds. showers, and sunshine.

This storm should bring significant snow to the higher mountains of Utah, Wyoming, and Montana late this week.

Here in Colorado, I do think many mountains could get 3-6 inches of snow, especially on Friday morning above 10,000 feet when intense precipitation falls along the leading edge of the cold front.

Next weekend

Not bad. Some sun, some clouds, and some showers. The best chance for clouds and showers will likely be in the northern half of the state. Also, it’ll be chilly with mountain-town high temperatures in the 50s.

I am a bit concerned that Thursday’s wind could rip some of the gorgeous golden Aspen leaves from their trees, but there should still be nice leaf viewing over the weekend. Just put on an extra layer or two as temperatures will be noticeably cooler than this past weekend.

Announcement - New Hiking Weather App!

OpenSummit has arrived!

The app provides hourly forecasts for each 14,000 foot peak in Colorado, including the chance of lightning, precipitation, summit temperature, and summit wind speed.

Also, and I find this super cool, the app shows recent Instagram pictures taken near each mountain. You can quickly see the trail conditions (is there snow?) by looking at these recent pictures.

This is version one of the app, and for now it is exclusively available as an app for iPhone. If you have an iPhone, and you like to hike 14ers, I would be thankful if you would download the app, play with it, and leave a (hopefully positive) review and send us lots of feedback to [email protected].

Download the app here: http://opsw.co/OpenSummitapp
