April ends with bluebird skies

Update

Saturday was a showery day across the state as another 1-4 inches accumulated at most mountains with a bit more than this in the eastern foothills.

Then the storm moved away on Saturday night and for the first time in about a week, we’ll see mostly dry weather for a day.

This latest storm was the culmination of a very snowy end to April. Here is the total snowfall during the 10 days between April 20-30 at the mountains which were open during this entire stretch:

  • Loveland: 41”
  • Abasin: 33”
  • Winter Park: 29”

That’s 2.5 to 3.5 feet of snow in 10 days, which is a solid amount here in Colorado and I hope you took advantage of the pow!

Also, the recent snowy period stopped the declining snowpack and even helped to increase it just a bit. We are now (thick blue line) about equal to the average snowpack (red line) at the end of April.

Now on Sunday morning, the national radar shows that our storm has moved to the east of the Colorado mountains, with snow continuing to fall on Colorado’s eastern plains:

We’ll see dry weather today on Sunday, and then a few waves of energy will move across Colorado during the next few days.

These waves should bring snow showers to the northern mountains between Sunday evening and Wednesday morning with 2-4 or 3-6 inches of accumulation. Because these waves of energy will be weaker than the ones last week, and because the temperature will be a few degrees warmer, I don’t know that Loveland or Abasin will have full-on powder days on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. But a few inches now and again could keep conditions soft and fun.

We will then see sunny and very warm weather begin on Thursday and this will likely continue through next weekend.
