Active Pattern Ahead, Snow Will Slowly Pile Up

Summary

After one more quiet day, the pattern over Europe will change. Chances for snow will increase as a series of storms move across the region. While none of these events are overly impressive on their own, the Alps and to a lesser degree the Pyrenees will see off-and-on snow for most of the next week, resulting in some respectable base building totals.

Short Term Forecast

Back in the states, the snow has been plentiful this week, especially in Utah. Follow this link to see one of my recent backcountry tours in the Cottonwoods.

Off and On Snow Throughout the Week

Chances for accumulating snow are on the rise this week, beginning on Monday, as a small and weak storm sneaks under the massive ridge that has been keeping most of Europe dry. For most of the week, the temperatures will still be a bit on the warm side, resulting in somewhat high snow levels. By the end of the week, some colder air will move in and bring the snow levels down. Below are the snow totals through the entire period, but read on for the day-by-day breakdown.

Forecast for Monday 11/14 - Tuesday 11/15

The first storm of the week will come up from the southeast and bring snowfall to the Alps early Monday morning through Tuesday afternoon. Below are the modest snow totals during that time, with the biggest accumulations in the western Alps in France, Switzerland, and Italy.

Forecast for Wednesday 11/16 - Thursday 11/17

Snow will pick up again in the western Alps and also the Pyrenees in the early AM hours on Wednesday. The small storm from early in the week will be absorbed by a much larger storm system that moves in from the northwest. Before moving East across Europe, this more extensive storm system will first send a small wave of snow through the region on Wednesday and Thursday. Below are the snow totals from this second round of snow.

Light accumulations in the Pyrenees and Alps, except some higher totals in the mountains of southeastern France.

Forecast for Friday 11/18 - Sunday 11/20

The third round of snow moves in late Thursday night into Friday morning. Snow will fall off and on through Sunday. There will be more cold air around for this period, so snow levels will be considerably lower. Below are the temperature departures from normal for Sunday. The blue colors indicate below normal temperatures, which extend across a large portion of Europe during this time.

And below are the snow totals for this time period. You can see the accumulating snow stretches farther north and south, indicating the lower snow levels during this round.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Monday 11/21 - Friday 11/25

In the long range, the active pattern may continue. The models aren’t showing any major ridges building back over Europe during the week of the 21st. There are no signals for strong storms either, but it's definitely better than model agreement on a strong ridge.
Thanks so much for reading the OpenSnow Europe forecast. Look for another update on the progression of these storms and the extended outlook early next week.  Follow me @lstone84 on Instagram to track and chase storms with me!
