Alps Stay Active, Pyrenees Get Deep Too

Summary

Light snow continues for the Alps through the evening and overnight, wrapping up later in the night. The next round of snow comes in the early hours of Sunday, bringing moderate totals to the Alps. The pattern stays active with the next storm favoring the Pyrenees, with leftovers headed to the Alps.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Friday 1/13 - Saturday 1/14

Lingering snow showers in the Alps tapering off overnight, with a dry Saturday on top. Seasonable temperatures with mostly cloudy skies throughout the day.

Forecast for Sunday 1/15

The next storm arrives in the early overnight hours on Sunday, with light snow in the western Alps. This will be a moderate event favoring the high elevations of the French Alps, with snow continuing through Monday morning. Expect 10 - 20 cms for the upper elevations along the France/Switzerland/Italy border, with 8 - 15 cms elsewhere in the western and central Alps. Totals will be less in the Austrian Alps. European forecast below.

Forecast for Monday 1/16 - Wednesday 1/17

Without much of a break, the next storm will approach the Alps and Pyrenees early Monday morning. A stronger upper level storm taking a more southerly track across Europe will allow for heavy snow in the Pyrenees and moderate snow in the Alps.  As of now, it looks like the Pyrenees will be the big winner with this storm, with up to 1.5 m in the western Pyrenees! Woh! From zero to hero possibly at resorts in this region. Temperatures will be cold for this storm too, so snow levels shouldn't be a concern and snow quality will be good. Resorts along the France/Spain border in the Pyrenees, especially in the western part, will do really well over this two day period.

In the Alps, snow starts a little bit later, but will continue through Wednesday as well. The heaviest totals in the Alps will be in the southern French Alps, where 20 - 40 cms are possible. The southerly storm track will result in southerly winds for the central and eastern Alps, which will favor southern facing slops in Italy and Austria/Slovenia, where 15 - 30 cms are possible. The rest of the central and eastern Alps will most likely see lesser totals, in the 8 - 16 cm range.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thursday 1/18 - Monday 1/22

As the previously mentioned strong low pressure system stalls and then lingers in near southern Italy, light snow will be possible through Friday morning, with some moderate snow again in the western Pyrenees. The next wave could move in as early as Friday evening, with more heavy snow for the Pyrenees and Alps.
