Huge Storm Underway for the Pyrenees and French Alps

Summary

The Fench Alps saw heavy snow during the last 24 hours, and it is already snowing heavily in the Pyrenees as this impressive storm gets started. The Pyrenees will get absolutely buried through the end of this week, with additional significant snow for the Alps too.

Update

Forecast for Tuesday 1/17 - Saturday 1/21

This will be a long duration snow event with several waves of heavy snow. Snow is coming down hard already and should continue through Saturday. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday all look like pwoder days in the Pyrenees, as snow pounds this region. Perhas the deepst overnight totals will be Tuesday and Friday morning, but near constant throughout the period will result in great conditions all day, every day.

This impressive snow event is courtesy of a strong slow moving upper level low pressure system that will be ejecting several waves of energy toward the Pyrenees. The position of the low will initially result in winds out of the west, but by Wednesday a long period of moist northwest winds pushing up against the Pyrenees will begin, wringing out all the moisture in the atmosphere.

The western Alps will do really well from this storm also, with snow rom today through Thursday. Light snow may linger in the eastern Alps padding their totals a bit as well. Below is the snow foreast from thr European model.

Generally looking like 1-1.5 m for the Pyrenees and 25-50 cms for the French Alps. Go get it!
