Storm #1 Delivered, Storm #2 Approaching, and Storm #3 On It's Heels
Summary
The first of four storms dropped more than 50 cms in many locations in the French Alps, and 30-50 cms in the Swiss Alps as well. The next storm arrives Wednesday afternoon, with another quick burst of snow, followed by a third moderate storm on Friday the 13th, and then another big storm is possible after that.
Update
Today's post will just be an update as we are in the middle of an active snowy pattern that will continue for the foreseeable future. Before I get into the next storm, let's talk about the snow that just fell. The French Alps, as expected, did the best with this storm. Several resorts saw over 50 cms with even more at upper elevations. Heavy snow fell in the Swiss Alps, Italy, and Austria as well. Check out some picture from across the Alps below.
Forecast for Wednesday 1/11 - Thursday 1/12
The first of two quick hitting storms starts Wednesday afternoon, and by the end of the day Thursday, expect 10-15 cms at upper elevations of the Alps, as temperatures run a bit on the warm side.
Forecast for Friday 1/13 - Saturday 1/14
The next burst of snow begins early Friday morning and lasts through Saturday morning, with another 10-20 cms expected. Temperatures remain warm so accumulations will be focused to the higher elevations once again.
Forecast for Sunday 1/15 - Monday 1/16
The third storm in five days kicks off Saturday night and will continue through Monday morning, with deeper totals. By Monday, expect 20-40 cms across the western and eastern Alps, and potentially some huge totals, up to 90 cms, in the Julian Alps on on the Austria/Slovenia border.
Below is the snowfall forecast from the European model for these three storms combined, through Monday 1/16.
The week of Monday 1/16 through Friday 1/20 will remain active with more chances for snow. This pattern could produce another very big dump, but we'll get more into those details in a future post.
