Light Snow, then Another Big Dump for the Alps

Summary

Light snow will be falling in the eastern Alps this weekend, ahead of another significant storm early next week. There will be several waves of heavy snow with this storm, and it will continue through Saturday before winding down. Behind that, things calm down a bit with a break in the action likely for a few days.

Short Term Forecast

After a dismal Christmas and New Year’s for most of the Alps and Pyrenees, the last three weeks have really turned things around. Conditions are good overall, and very good in areas like the French Alps, southwestern Italian Alps, and the western Pyrenees from several recent storms. The action continues over the next week with another solid storm in tap.

Forecast for Saturday 1/28 - Sunday 1/29

The nearly immovable upper level low planted in the Mediterranean, responsible for all the snow in the last week, will still produce some light snow in the eastern Alps this weekend. As this feature finally weakens and drifts east, it will eject a small piece of energy that will keep light snow going through Sunday.  Expect around 8-15 cms mainly in the Austrian Alps, with cold temperatures, while the rest of the region stays mostly cloudy.

Forecast for Monday 1/30 - Saturday 2/4

On Monday afternoon, a strong storm will move in from the Northwest. The first wave, through Tuesday afternoon, will focus on the Austrian Alps once again. A second wave arrives Tuesday night, without much of a break, bringing heavy snow to the northern side of the French, Swiss, and Austrian Alps through Friday night, with light snow lingering through Saturday. Total snowfall from these two waves, through Saturday, in the Austrian Alps, will be 1-1.5 m!!! Lighter, but still solid amounts of 30-60 cms possible for the northern French Alps, with increasing totals as you head into the Swiss Alps and farther east. With cool temperature the snow will be good quality and pile up fast. Below is the European model forecast for snow during this period.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sunday 2/5 - Thursday 2/9

After this big storm winds down on Saturday, models show a ridge developing over most of Europe. That should keep things dry for most of the week. You can see the five day upper level pattern below, with a ridge firmly in place.
