Just a quick update today, as things are pretty quiet until the end of the week. The timing of the next storm has changed a bit, but significant snow is still likely.
Forecast for Tuesday 3/21 - Thursday 3/23
Not much change here. Warm and dry for most of this week with no a whole lot going on. There should be some sun Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday, before clouds return, with partly cloudy skies on Thursday.
Forecast for Friday 3/24 - Thursday 3/30
This next storm will come in several waves. I will outline what the models currently show for timing and amounts, but the specifics will likely change a bit before the storm arrives on Friday.
Beginning very early Friday morning, a series of storms will begin to impact the Alps. The first wave of snow should last through Saturday afternoon, with moderate amounts expected, highest along the France/Italy/Switzerland border. Up to 30 cms are possible in the higher elevations, with generally 10-20 cms for the northern French Alps, western Swiss Alps, and Austrian Alps. Below is the snow forecast for this first round of snow from the European model.
The next wave will likely begin later Saturday night and continue through midday Tuesday. This round of snow looks more significant, with moderate to heavy snow at times during this period. Expect between 30-60 cms during this time, with isolated totals approaching 70 cms. Below is the snow forecast for the second round of snow from the European model.
Finally, a third round of snow is possible starting Tuesday night. This could be another solid event, with similar amounts to the previous round of snow, with the bullseye over the eastern Swiss Alps and western Austrian Alps. Below is the snow forecast for the third round of snow from the European model.
And finally, below is the total snow forecast during the period from the American model, which shows substantial accumulations during that time as well.
Overall, both models agree on significant snow starting around the end of next week and continuing into the following week. Totals and timing may change a bit, but I would expect at least a solid storm. Of course, with the third round of snow being more than a week away, I have less confidence in that at this time. I will provide a few updates before we get there though.
