Heads up, there may be fresher snow! Read the latest Europe Daily Snow

Heavy Snow Returns to the Alps

A late season storm is set to begin early Sunday morning and continue for several days. Significant snow is expected across most of the Alps with this storm. An additional wave of snow is possible next week as well, with more storms beyond that as an active period takes hold. It looks like Winter isn't quite through with the Alps just yet, and I hope more powder days are what you're looking for.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Sunday March 26 - Tuesday March 28

Snow continues Sunday across the Alps today (Sunday), and will intensify Sunday evening in the Alps and Sunday night in the French Alps. This system has some impressive cold air associated with it, so snow quality should be very good and right side up. Moderate to heavy snow will fall through Monday afternoon, and them light snow will persist through early Tuesday morning the Swiss Alps and through Tuesday afternoon in the Austrian Alps. By Tuesday afternoon, expect 30 - 60 cms across the Alps, with the highest amounts likely in the central Swiss Alps, but pretty uniformly widespread deep snow totals elsewhere. Check the European snowfall forecast below.

Forecast for Wednesday March 29 - Thursday March 30

Some light snow is possible late Tuesday night and early Wednesday, under a warmer regime, especially in the Swiss and Austrian Alps. Another wave of light snow will swing through Thursday morning, heaviest in the French Alps, ending Thursday night. Combined totals for these lighter waves from the European model below.

Forecast for Friday March 31 - Monday April 3

Another cold late season storm is possible next weekend. Right now, the models have snow starting Friday morning and continuing perhaps through Monday. Very cold air will accompany this storm, resulting in more low density snow. Models are in pretty good agreement for this second major storm, with between .5 - 1 m of snow possible, deepest in the French Alps.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tuesday April 3 - Saturday April 7

Overall, the upper level pattern remains favorable for additional storms during this time. There isn't any clear signal for more significant snow, but additional storms are possible without any strong areas of high pressure setting up. Don't put the skis and boards away just yet.
