First Scandinavian Resorts Open and Potential Pattern Change

Summary

More snow has been falling in Scandinavia and the first of the resorts there has opened, albeit with a white ribbon of death. We finally see some troughs (mid level storms) break into the persistent ridge this weekend with chance of high elevation snow on Sunday. The pattern may remain active beyond that as well, and hopefully we can start building a base.

Short Term Forecast

The first Scandinavian resorts opened last weekend, with Kuda in Finland kicking off the 2023/24 season with a nice white ribbon of death. This strip of snow was harvested from last season's farmed snow. On Sunday, a storm rolled through bringing some fresh snow for opening weekend. Check out some shots from the weekend.

Levi in Finland was opened for the season on Friday 10/6 as well.

Western Europe has continued to be hot, with records being broken daily, as seen below.

The red and pink colors indicate where official daily temperature records were set.

Warm temperatures will continue for the rest of the week, before this region finally gets a break with the arrival of a cold front on Saturday. In the temperature anomaly map below, you can see the above normal temperatures persisting until Saturday.

The arrival of the cold temperatures coincides with the approach of a mid level area of low pressure, with associated showers as well. Showers should arrive Saturday afternoon, with chances for high elevation snow starting late Saturday night or Sunday morning.

The orientation of the front will bring the coldest temperatures to the eastern Alps, so I would expect the best chances for accumulating snow in the high elevations of the Austria. Some high elevations of the Italian Alps could see some flakes too. Overall, this doesn't look like more than a 4 - 8 cm event.

Check out the snowfall forecast from the Canadian model for Sunday through Tuesday. Seems pretty good.

Extended Forecast

For the middle and end of the week, the models diverge. There is some agreement on more active weather, but the storm track is being handled very differently. Until I see more of a consensus, I would just say that there is a chance for more stormy weather during this period.
