Austrian Alps Light Snow Recap and Another Chance for Snow Thursday/Friday
Summary
The high elevations of the Austrian helps picked up a little snow this weekend as the cold front moved through the region, but no significant accumulations. Active weather continues but with a southwesterly/westerly storm track and temperatures will be on the warm side.
Short Term Forecast
Several resorts in the Austrian Alps saw some light snow at upper elevations this weekend. Check out a few of them below.
Snow also fell in Germany near the border of the Check Republic, in Erzgebirge and the ski resort Fichtelberg. Check out some photos from these spots below.
Iceland received quite a bit of snow over the last few days, resulting in some quality powder turns as you can see here.
The pattern will be very active over the next ten days, with a series of storms coming across the Atlantic into western Europe. The first storm, already bringing some rain to the Pyrenees, comes from the southwest, and will be accompanied with a warm that will draw in warm air from the south. You can see the area of low pressure off the coast of Spain and the counter clockwise flow pumping warmer air into Western Europe.
The second storm, arriving in western Europe Wednesday night, will come more from the west, and will have a weak cold front with it. Later in the week, late Thursday and into Friday, this cold front will reach the western Alps, bringing the chance of high elevation snow.
The best chances for for snow will be in the French and Italian Alps, as the winds out of the S/SW will provide favorable orographics for these regions. Initially, winds out of the southwest will favor the southwestern French Alps. As the storm progresses east, winds will shift more southerly, favoring the Italian Alps. You can see the favored areas given the wind shifts and the snowfall forecast below.
The Swiss and Austrian should see some light snow too, with he southern aspects favored.
The mid-level area of low pressure stalls out across central Europe, keeping things active through the weekend. With temperatures never getting too cold, I don't expect big totals. By the end of Monday, upper elevations of the French and Italian Alps could see 10 - 20 + cms. The wintry phase of the second storm is still about five days out, so I will update that as we get closer.
Extended Forecast
As mentioned, this mid-level area of low pressure will stall over Central Europe, before weakening and retreating to the north. The models agree the pattern remains active after that, but there are some key differences in the location of the next system.
