Storm Rages On, Two More Behind It

Summary

Heavy snow continues across the Alps, especially in Austria and Switzerland. This storm will keep pounding the region through Sunday, with another arriving Monday that will favor the western Alps. A third storm is likely starting on Thursday as this active pattern continues.

Short Term Forecast

The first storm in this series has delivered very heavy snow so far, and we're not even halfway through. Moderate to heavy snow will continue today, before another very intense period of snowfall begins tonight (Saturday night).

Expect 10 - 25 cms throughout the day in the western Austrian and eastern Swiss Swiss Alps, with a bit less as you move out of this region. On Saturday night, another 10 - 20 cm is expected in the eastern Swiss Alps and the Tirol and Vorarlberg regions of Austria. Sunday should be the best pow day in the series, as snow depths rise and the storm total increases.

Light to moderate snow will continue for the first part of the day on Sunday as well, with an additional 5 - 10 cms, as precipitation winds down west to east.

Check out the snow forecast from the European model below.

There won't be much of a break overall with the next storm arriving on Monday. Snow will start in the French and Swiss Alps and quickly spread into Austria as well. This storm will take a more westerly track with the heaviest snow in the French Alps and western Swiss Alps, where 20 - 50 cms is likely. The Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Isere, and Hautes-Alpes regions in France should do best.

Totals will be less farther east, but the Tirol and Vorarlberg regins in Austria should see an additional 15 - 30 cms with this storm. Tuesday should be the best day in the French and Swiss Alps, while Wednesday will be the winner in the Austrian Alps. Snow will taper off west to east starting early Wednesday morning.

Extended Forecast

Things stay active with yet another storm on track for Thursday, this time with a more westerly/southwesterly flow. It looks like this storm will dig farther south limiting initial impacts to Thursday and Friday, and the southern Alps including Italy may finally get in on the action. As the storm progresses east and another wave devleops behind, more snow will fall in the northern and western Alps. Check out the upper level pattenr during this time below, with the storm coming off he Atlantic and digging south to the west of the Alps.

This is getting pretty far out in the long range, so there's still time for some of these details to change.
