Quiet Stretch Continues, Active Weather Returns Next Week

Summary

A few more quiet and dry days are on track for the Alps and Pyrenees. A more active pattern is expected to begin around the start of next week. Major storms aren't expected until a bit later but some snow is possible starting mid-month.

Short Term Forecast

I came down with a nasty stomach bug yesterday so this will be just a quick update today. The models haven't changed much over the last twenty-four hours, with a ridge dominating our weather through the end of the week. The ridge starts to weaken and move west, allowing a strong upper-level low to move into northern Europe.

The timing and strength of the next series of storms will depend on how far south this upper-level low gets. At first, the models have storms grazing the northern Alps. By the middle of next week, the low sags a bit farther south increasing the chances for more significant snow. Additionally, there are some signs of a system moving in from the west as well.

Below is the average upper-level pattern for the five days ending January 20th. You can see the strong low pressure parked over northern Europe.

Enjoy the sunshine for now and I'll be back with a more detailed update tomorrow, as the next period of active weather becomes more clear.

Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!

Track Hourly Snowfall From Nearby Weather Stations

Live Snow is our name for the latest hour-by-hour snowfall data that we pull from thousands of weather stations across the United States and Canada.

You can use this feature to see how much snow has fallen in near real-time rather than waiting for an "official" measurement from a resort or another data service which often only reports once per day.

  1. Go to any location screen.
  2. Tap the "Snow Report" tab.
  3. View data from the closest weather station or...
  4. Tap the "Weather Stations" tab to view all nearby data.

Please note that this is an experimental feature. Automated snowfall measurements from remote weather stations are sometimes difficult to interpret due to unreliable or "jumpy" data, and we do our best to programmatically remove inaccurate data.
