Dry Pattern Through Mid-Month

Summary

Our stretch of dry weather continues this week and through the weekend. The storm door opens around the 15th but it looks like anything significant will hold off until the middle of next week.

Short Term Forecast

This period of quiet and dry weather continues as the region finally gets a longer break between storms. The ridge off the Scandinavian coast keeps the storms away for the rest of the week and through the weekend.

By the end of the weekend, the ridge starts to drift west allowing an upper-level low to move over Northern Europe. Shortly thereafter, the jet stream will become more active over the Atlantic, allowing storms to move into Central Europe from the west. This will likely kick off a more active pattern from mid-month and beyond.

The first chances for snow will come from the aforementioned upper-level low sagging farther south at the end of the weekend and early next week. Right now, this potential looks to bring some light snow and/or snow showers.

The upper-level pattern will continue to evolve though, and as the ridge continues to move west and strengthens over Greenland, an active jet stream over the Atlantic will be able to bring storms in from the west. In the figure below, you can see the strong ridge over the British Isles at the start of the GIF. Then it starts to weaken and move west. Finally, an area of low-pressure moves in from the west, and combines with the existing low, bringing active weather back to the region.

This pattern does not typically produce cold storms but can often bring a lot of moisture. There’s still some time for this pattern to change, but the latest guidance suggests a storm cycle will start around mid-next week.

Track Hourly Snowfall From Nearby Weather Stations

Live Snow is our name for the latest hour-by-hour snowfall data that we pull from thousands of weather stations across the United States and Canada.

You can use this feature to see how much snow has fallen in near real-time rather than waiting for an "official" measurement from a resort or another data service which often only reports once per day.

  1. Go to any location screen.
  2. Tap the "Snow Report" tab.
  3. View data from the closest weather station or...
  4. Tap the "Weather Stations" tab to view all nearby data.

Please note that this is an experimental feature. Automated snowfall measurements from remote weather stations are sometimes difficult to interpret due to unreliable or "jumpy" data, and we do our best to programmatically remove inaccurate data.
