High-Elevation Snow Continues, Cooling Has Begun
Summary
High-elevation snow continues today mainly in the western Alps but the cooling trend has started. Snow levels will drop more substantially Thursday night with the final push of heavy snow into Friday morning. A small and warm storm is expected from Monday to Tuesday of next week and then a more prolonged dry stretch is possible.
Short Term Forecast
Another stormy day on tap today (Thursday) in the western Alps, with perhaps the heaviest snow this storm has to offer. Snow levels have started to come down and will continue to do so, but they're still well above the valley floor.
Snow will continue into Thursday night and through Friday morning as snow levels lower more rapidly, resulting in some better-quality snow. The biggest totals will be in the northern French and western Swiss Alps. The initial southwesterly flow will allow the southern side of the Alps in Italy to get in on the action too. Check out the snow forecast for the remainder of the storm.
A smaller storm is still on track to bring some snow to the Pyrenees from Friday to Saturday.
The rest of the weekend should be cool and mainly dry across the Alps and Pyrenees.
A storm system to the north looks to sag far enough south to bring some light to moderate snow to the Alps on Monday and Tuesday. The northern French Alps through the Swiss Alps and western Australian Alps should see 10 - 20 cms with perhaps a bit more in the central Swiss Alps. Snow levels will be high with this storm as well.
Below is the latest snow forecast for the early week storm.
The storm track remains to the north for the rest of the week with a slight chance one of the storms could get far enough south for some minor impacts.
Extended Forecast
The pattern then becomes even less favorable for storms in the Alps and Pyrenees, with the ridge strengthening and expanding northward. This would send the storm track well north of the region and keep things dry. The models have this pattern sticking around through the early part of February.
