Quiet Weekend Ahead
Summary
The last wave of snow moved through the Alps last night and we have a calm and dry weekend on tap. Another round of snow is expected for the northern side of the Alps from Monday to Tuesday. We then enter a generally warm and dry pattern that could stick around through the end of the month.
Short Term Forecast
Today is the day! Temperatures have continued to fall with the coldest phase of the storm occurring last night. Snow levels were near base elevations yesterday morning and last night fell well below them, producing some quality snow across the western Alps.
A few lingering snow showers are possible across the Alps today (Friday), but the storm will depart fairly quickly leading to some partial clearing in the afternoon. Hopefully some new terrain opens up in the northern French/western Swiss Alps with the storm total waiting. If not, temperatures stay cold Friday night and Saturday so the terrain that remains closed should be great on Saturday and Sunday.
After a quiet and cold weekend a small storm to the north will graze the Alps from Monday to Tuesday. Models are still ironing out the details on snow totals, but I think this will bring 5 - 15 cms with a bit more at the higher elevation resorts. The storm track and northwest winds will bring the most precipitation from the northern French Alps through the Swiss Alps and into the western Austrian Alps, with snow wrapping up late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.
We start to dry out on Wednesday as the ridge builds in over Spain once again. This time it will strengthen and expand northward through the later part of the week. You can see the evaluation of the upper-level pattern below.
This will not only block storms from reaching the Alps but will also direct warm air into the region. A period of above-normal temperatures is expected next week and through the weekend.
Extended Forecast
I’m not really seeing any signs of a pattern change that is more conducive to storms through at least the first few days of February. The models generally keep that ridge around in some form through that period. This ridge looks quite persistent. As always, I’ll keep an eye on it and update you if anything changes.
