Pleasant Weekend Followed By A Quick Storm

Summary

A pleasant weekend is on tap across the Alps and Pyrenees after another stormy period. A quick but potent storm will bring snow to the northern Alps early next week and then we enter another stretch of dry weather.

Short Term Forecast

A quiet and cold start to the weekend across most of the Alps and Pyrenees today. Temperatures will moderate a bit on Sunday. Snow depths at mid and upper elevations continue to impress, with significant discrepancies down low. Alpe d'Huez has a snow depth of 5 meters on the upper mountain!

The next storm will be a bit cooler than the last and will bring snow to the northern side of the Alps on Monday and Tuesday. This will be a fairly fast-moving storm and will focus on the northern French, Swiss, and Austrian Alps.

This storm will produce 10 - 20 cms above 1600 m in the northern French and western Swiss Alps, with 5 - 15 cms elsewhere. Some of the models are hinting at another quick wave of snow Wednesday to Thursday that would add an additional 5 - 15 cms across the northern Alps and up to 25 + cms in the central Austrian Alps. We should have a better idea of this possible second wave on Sunday.

Check out the latest forecast from the European model below.

The storm should wrap up on Tuesday (or Thursday depending on that second wave) and then we’ll dry out for the rest of the week.

Extended Forecast

The long range forecast remains bleak. The ridge will redevelop over Spain, strengthen, and expand northward. This will block any storms from moving into the Alps and Pyrenees, with the storm track well north and east. The models keep this ridge in place through at least the first few days of February.
