Quiet Sunday, Storm Monday

Summary

One more quiet and cool day before another round of snow arrives on Monday. A solid but fast-moving storm is on tap for Monday through Tuesday morning. Additional rounds of snow showers may graze northern/eastern Alps later in the week but otherwise the long-range looks dry.

Short Term Forecast

Another quiet and cool day is in store for the region on Sunday with a good amount of sunshine. The conditions have been great the last few days, especially in the northern French Alps. The final round of snow from the previous storm delivered deep, low-density snow on top of a dense cushion that smoothed everything out on the surface.

The next storm system arrives from the north on Monday. Once again the northern Alps will be favored, as moderate snow gets underway Monday afternoon. Snow will pick up Monday night and continue through Tuesday morning. Generally, 10 - 20 cms is expected across the northern Alps from France through Austria.

The latest snow forecast from the European model through Thursday is below.

Another round of snow is possible starting on Wednesday, but the models still don’t agree on the strength of this wave. I think 5 - 15 cms is possible with the biggest totals likely in the Austrian Alps.

After this wave wraps up on Thursday we should see a break in the action for several days as the ridge amplifies over Western Europe. We’ll have to keep an eye on this ridge for the possibility of a weak storm moving under it as it begins to weaken.

Extended Forecast

Ridging over Western Europe looks persistent, with the models keeping this feature around through the first few days of February. There aren’t any signs of a more active pattern returning to the Alps and Pyrenees at this time.

Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!
