Two Fast But Solid Storms This Week
Summary
A solid storm starts today (Monday) and will favor the western Alps. The midweek storm has trended stronger and will bring a nice round of snow to the eastern Alps. Storms will continue to drop down east of the ridge and impact the eastern Alps.
Short Term Forecast
Monday will start out dry and cool but it won’t last for long as the next round of snow arrives in the afternoon. Snow will fall at a decent clip from the northern French Alps through the Swiss Alps before becoming heavier overnight. The onset of snow will be a bit later in the Austrian Alps, but heavy snow will fall overnight here as well.
Expect 5 - 10 cms for the northern French Alps Monday afternoon, and < 5 cms for most of the Swiss Alps. The main wave of heavier snow arrives Monday night and will bring 10 - 20 cms from the northern French Alps through the Austrian Alps by Tuesday morning. Snow levels will range from 1500 m in the west to 1200 m in the east on Monday night.
Some lingering snow showers will be possible in France and Switzerland on Tuesday with light snow continuing in the Austrian Alps. Up to 5 cms is possible during the day and again Tuesday night in the Austrian Alps with just a few cms possible in the west.
The total snow forecast for this storm from the European model is below.
The midweek storm has trended a bit stronger over the last few days. Storms are trying to slide down the eastern side of the ridge and this next one will be close enough to the Alps to bring another round of snow, especially in Austria.
Before the next round of precipitation, temperatures will rise on Wednesday. When the storm arrives Wednesday night, snow levels will be around 1800 m. Snow will become heavy on Thursday but this storm will move out quickly, with snow tapering off in the evening.
Expect 10 - 20 cms for the central Austrian Alps, with 5 - 15 cms in the western Austrian and Swiss Alps. Impacts will be limited in the French Alps. As I’ve been discussing the last few days, the models are still not in agreement regarding this storm. Check out the snow totals predicted by each of the major three models below.
The range for snow in Austria across these models is around 10 cms to as much as 50 cms. I am going with the middle ground across the models given the discrepancy.
Another storm will try to come down the eastern side of the ridge and pass close enough to the eastern Alps for another round of snow on Friday night. This looks very similar to the previous storm but a bit colder. I’ll have more details on this potential storm in a future post.
Extended Forecast
This pattern, with a ridge over western Europe and storms dropping down the eastern side, will continue into early next week and beyond. The long-range models don’t show any major changes to this setup through the first week of February. As these storms drop down from the north and move through eastern Europe, we’ll have to watch each one to see if it gets far enough west to bring more precipitation to the Alps, especially in Austria.
