One Storm Down, Next Round Favors Austria

Summary

The first in this series of quick and small storms moved through last night delivering solid accumulations especially on the western Alps. The next wave moves through from Wednesday night through Thursday favoring the Austrian Alps. Another round of showers is possible this weekend but major storms should stay east of the Alps and Pyrenees.

Short Term Forecast

Most of the northern Alps received a nice refresh last night, with the greatest totals in the northern French Alps. Another fast-moving storm is on tap for Wednesday to Thursday that will favor the Austrian Alps. Snow showers are possible this weekend as another storm moves down the eastern side of the ridge over Western Europe.

We’ll have some lingering snow showers on Tuesday especially in the Austrian Alps but things should clear out in the west giving way to partly cloudy skies. Wednesday should stay dry but will feature rapidly rising temperatures ahead of the nest storm.

The next storm will track down the eastern side of the ridge and bring snow back to the eastern Alps starting Wednesday night. Snow levels will start very high, but start to fall with moderate snow falling through Thursday morning. As snow becomes heavier on Thursday, snow levels will continue to drop.

The central Austrian Alps should see the most snow, including the Salzburg, Steiermark, and Oberosterrich regions. Expect 5 - 10 cms by Thursday morning and then another 10 - 20 cms during the day. Snow levels should fall to around 900 - 1200 m on Thursday morning.

Totals farther west in the western Austrian and Swiss Alps will be in the 5 - 15 cms range, with a bit more possible in the St. Anton area.

Any lingering snow shower should taper off by Friday morning. Another round of snow showers is possible Friday night through Saturday morning across the Swiss/Austrian Alps, with just a few cms expected.

Extended Forecast

I’m a bit of a broken record especially here in the long-range but the ridge over Western Europe holds strong through the weekend and next week. There are some signs this ridge will start to break down during the first week of February, which could bring about a pattern change. There’s some support from the teleconnections as well, with the North American Oscillation (NAO) going negative around that time.
