Next Storm Headed for the Eastern Alps

Summary

We’ll have a break in the action on Wednesday before the next fast-moving storm arrives Wednesday night. The eastern Alps will be favored with a quick burst of heavy snow on Thursday. A more prolonged dry stretch is expected starting next week.

Short Term Forecast

The Alps will dry out briefly on Wednesday before the next storm arrives Wednesday night. The ridge over Western Europe will keep this storm east of the Alps, but it will be close enough for Austria to see some heavy snow. Another round of light to moderate snow is possible Friday night through Saturday as well, mainly impacting the Swiss and Austrian Alps. The ridge is then expected to strengthen and expand northward limiting any storms from reaching the Alps.

After a calm and dry day, the next storm will arrive in the eastern Alps Wednesday evening. Light snow overnight will transition to heavy snow early Thursday morning and continue throughout the day. Snow will decrease in intensity Thursday evening with snow showers continuing through midday Friday.

This storm will mainly impact the Austrian Alps, with the heaviest snow in the mountains of the eastern Tyrol, Salzburg, and western Styron regions. Total snow accumulations will be in the 15 - 30 cm range, with the heaviest snow on Thursday. Snow showers will linger into Friday. Little snow is expected in the Swiss and French Alps.

A weaker storm will bring a round of snow showers Friday night through Saturday, with 5 - 15 cm across the inner-alpine area in the Swiss and Austrian Alps. Resorts in the eastern Tyrol could see slightly higher totals.

Extended Forecast

Later this weekend and into next week the ridge of Western Europe will strengthen and expand north. This should keep any storms away during this time. Later in the week the ridge starts to weaken and retreat to the west. This should allow storms from the north to track close enough to the Alps to bring back chances for snow.
