Two Storms for the Eastern Alps
Summary
Two storms will bring a solid periods of accumulating snow through Saturday on the eastern Alps. The western Alps stay mostly dry with this easterly storm track. The rest of the weekend through much of next week should remain dry.
Short Term Forecast
Temperatures were very warm as this storm got started last night in the Austrian Alps, leading to rain below 2000m. Cold air moves in on Thursday, but mainly for the central and eastern Austrian Alps. In the west near St. Anton, temperatures remain warm and snow levels high. In the east, snow levels started falling last night, and should sit between 1200 - 1250 m throughout the day. In the western Austrian Alps, now levels will be around 1800m on Thursday. Snow showers will continue Thursday night and into Friday, with lower snow levels.
Accumulations in the central/eastern Austrian Alps will be in the 15 - 30 cm range above 2000 m, but totals will drop off quickly lower down and farther west. Impacts will be limited in the French and Swiss Alps, though in the Graubunden region in eastern Switzerland, modest accumulations are expected.
The next storm will arrive Friday evening, with a better slug of cold air overspreading a larger part of the Austrian Alps this time. Snow levels should hover around 1200 m for all of the Austrian Alps during this event. The snow will spread farther west with this storm as well, bringing solid accumulations to most of the Swiss Alps and snow showers in France. Snow quality should be better with this round of snow, and 5 - 15 cm are expected across most of the Swiss/Austrian Alps by Saturday morning.
This storm should wrap up early Saturday morning giving away to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. Saturday through at least Tuesday of next week should remain dry as the ridge keeps storms out of the region.
Extended Forecast
Chances for snow showers return around Wednesday of next week, but any significant storms should hold off until Friday. The models are in good agreement that the ridge will retreat allowing a deep upper-level low to set up closer to the eastern Alps. This upper-level low will be associated with some very cold air, but how far west into the Alps it gets is still unclear. This will impact how much precipitation the Alps see as well.
