Europe Daily Snow

One More Small Storm
Summary
One last round of snow Friday through Saturday and then we'll start an extended dry stretch. Extended, this season, amounts to around five days since we haven't had any periods longer than that without any storms. The next chance for precipitation will hold off until Wednesday night or Thursday of next week.
Short Term Forecast
Another small storm will bring more snow to the Alps Friday through Saturday morning. Accumulations will generally be < 20 cms in the Swiss and Austrian Alps, with just showers in the northern French Alps. Check out the latest snowfall map from the European model for this last wave of snow.
On Saturday, the ridge over western Europe will expand northeast, preventing storms from grazing the eastern Alps as they have done the last several days. This pattern will persist through the weekend and into the middle of next week before a new ridge develops over Spain. This feature will meander to the east later in the week keeping the storm track north of the Alps for the most part. You can see the progression of this upper-level ridge in the GIF below.
Extended Forecast
As the ridge flattens out and spreads east, the storm track will shift a bit farther south. The models are not in agreement about the exact position of this ridge later in the week though, so the confidence in the next storm remains low.
None of the models are showing a pattern shift that would allow for any significant storms at this time. The models show the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), a teleconnection we monitor for upper-level trends, flipping from positive to negative after the 10th of February. This doesn't ensure storms will return but overall is more favorable for cold and stormy conditions in Europe.
