The Most Boring Forecast of the Season
Summary
This is looking like the longest stretch of the season without any major storms. Warm and dry conditions are expected this weekend and for most of next week. The ridge may start to break down and allow storms to enter the region around the end of next weekend or early the following week.
Short Term Forecast
All I can say is wow. Forecasting for Europe has felt like a marathon this season. A constant barrage of storms with no more than a few days, at most five days, between storms.
We finally have a dry pattern that will stick around for more than a few days. A strong ridge currently centered over Western Europe will block any storms from tracking through the Alps and Pyrenees. This ridge will strengthen and expand over Central Europe, keeping the storms well north and east.
This area of high pressure will remain in the area through next week and into the weekend. Around that time, this persistent feature finally starts to weaken and move downstream.
The models do not agree about exactly what happens when the ridge breaks down. However, two of the three major models show a more favorable pattern setting up around February 10th. Check out the American/European ensemble forecast for the upper-level pattern on February 10th.
The European, and even more so the American model, show a strong upper-level low pressure over northern Europe. The models predict this low will sag south over the Alps and could potentially bring storms back to the region.
