Snow On Thursday, Weekend Stays Dry
Summary
There are still no big storms in sight. After a weak storm favoring the eastern Alps on Thursday, we transition back to dry weather for the weekend. The models have trended east for the late weekend storm, leading to limited impacts. More significant storms in a new pattern are still possible starting around the 8th.
Short Term Forecast
There are just a few changes since yesterday. The models have taken the late weekend storm a bit farther east, keeping most of the precipitation away from the Alps. Given the inconsistency with the location of this storm over the last several days, I wouldn’t count this storm out yet.
The rest of the forecast remains on track, with the main focus being the minor snow event in the eastern Alps on Thursday. This storm will bring 8 - 20 cms across most of the Austrian Alps extending a bit into the western Swiss Alps. Most of the snow will fall on Thursday with a few snow showers lingering into Friday morning. The latest snow forecast is below.
High pressure quickly returns to Southern Europe on Friday, bringing dry conditions back to the area. This will last through at least Sunday when another storm will be tracking east of the Alps. As mentioned, the models have taken this system farther east in the latest runs. This would keep most if not all of the precipitation east of the Alps.
Extended Forecast
I am definitely starting to sound like a broken record in the extended forecast section. Still, I am looking at and hoping for a pattern change in the 8th to 10th timeframe. I won’t get into specifics about this pattern change because the models have been all over the place in terms of what it looks like.
