Small Storm East, then Dry for a While
Summary
After a small storm for the eastern Alps on Thursday we should dry out for a while. The long range models continue to show a pattern change toward the middle/later part of next week.
Short Term Forecast
A small storm will bring 10 - 20 cms in the eastern Austrian Alps and 5 - 15 cms in the eastern Swiss/western Austrian on Thursday/Thursday night. Below is the latest snow forecast from the European model.
High pressure will rebuild across Western Europe and keep the Alps and Pyrenees dry for the foreseeable future. Given the history this season for storms to trend further and further east in this type of setup, I won’t rule out the possibility of another storm grazing the eastern Alps.
Otherwise, it will be warm and dry through the weekend and much of next week as well.
Our eyes then turn to the middle/latter part of next week. The models are slowly starting to come into better agreement in the pattern change arriving next week, at least as much as you can expect more than seven days out. The general idea is that an area of low pressure will approach the Alps from the west.
There have been several storms like this already this season. They tend to favor the western Alps, especially in France, with warm southwesterly flow followed by a cooler period of northwest winds. The western Swiss Alps and the Valle d’Aosta in Italy typically do well also.
It’s too early to talk timing and totals, but the latest guidance suggests this pattern change once the stubborn ridge vacates the region next week.
If this pattern persists, as some of the long-range models show, this could bring a lot of snow over the course of several days. I’ll be watching it closely and update you as more details emerge.
