Another Week Before A Stormy Pattern Returns

Summary

Quiet weather is upon us and will be for the next week. A strong storm is becoming more likely toward the end of next week, with heavy snow expected. Details need to be ironed out but the models become more aligned each day.

Short Term Forecast

There is not a whole lot to talk about for the next week, as the ridge over western Europe remains strong. All things must come to an end, however, and toward the end of next week, the ridge will weaken and move off to the east. This will allow storms to enter the region from the west, and that is exactly what the models are showing for next week.

The models are in good agreement of this pattern change, and of an upper-level system arriving from the west. They are not in agreement, yet, on exactly how this system will unfold, how far south it will get, and where the heaviest snow will be.

Below you can see the upper-level pattern on Saturday, February 10th, from the three major models.

The models show a similar upper-level structure, with low pressure extending from western Russia down through southwestern Europe. There are differences, however, in the southerly extent of the low-pressure west of the Alps, near Spain. Overall, this pattern favors the western and possibly southern Alps, of France and Italy. The latest snow forecasts show this as well.

This pattern would bring very cold air into the Alps later in the weekend as well. Until we get more consistency in the exact track of this storm, I won't get into any more details. I will keep tracking this pattern change and provide daily updates until the details become clear.

Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!
