The East Continues to Feast

Summary

After the warm and dry stretch comes to an end on Thursday, a weak storm will bring a round of snow to the Austrian and Swiss Alps. Another storm favoring the eastern Alps is expected early next week, but the models disagree on the strength at this time. A more significant pattern change is still expected around the 10th of February.

Short Term Forecast

Abnormally warm temperatures continue for a few more days across all the Alps and Pyrenees. The warm and dry weather comes to an end along the eastern side of the Alps courtesy of a weak storm, while the west stays warm and dry. This isn't a big storm, with snow totals in the 10 - 20 cm range for the Austrian and Eastern Swiss Alps. Check out the latest snow forecast from the European model.

This storm will clear out pretty quickly and temperatures will rise once again, with dry conditions through most of the weekend. Toward the end of the weekend, the ridge over western Europe begins to flatten and drift to the east. This will allow the storm track to come farther west introducing the chance for more storms. The models at this time do not agree on how far west this storm will track, and just how strong it will be. It doesn't appear that this will be a major storm though.

Extended Forecast

I am still watching the upper-level pattern changes expected the following weekend (Feb 10-11). The models are starting to pick up on a system moving in from the west/northwest. This would usher in some colder air and has the potential to bring more significant storms. This pattern favors the western Alps with the northwest winds and storm track. Let's hope we can get another big storm soon.
