Heavy Snow Continues
Summary
The storm has started strong and still has a long way to go. The southern Alps in Italy and Switzerland are going to be deep. This storm will linger through the early part of next week. A second and smaller storm will cruise through mid week. The break between storms is looking shorter with additional weak waves of rain and snow later in the week.
Short Term Forecast
Solid totals of 30 - 70 cms reported over the last few days in the Valle d’Aosta at Courmayer, Cervinia, and Champorcher. This storm will continue to impact the Alps through tomorrow (Monday), though the heaviest snow will shift to the eastern region. We should dry out starting Tuesday and have a few days before the next storm arrives later in the week.
As the latest storm moves off to the southeast snow will continue in the eastern Alps, with modest additional accumulations expected. Below are the expected additional accumulations from the European model.
This storm brought some impressive snow totals, especially in the southern Alps of Italy. The best conditions of the season have arrived in these areas.
The last lingering snow showers will wrap up Tuesday afternoon and then we should stay dry through Friday morning.
Then on Friday a weak storm system will arrive from the northwest and bring another round of light to moderate snow, in the 5 - 15 cm range for the neither Alps from France through Austria. This sharks should wrap up on Saturday.
Extended Forecast
Looking at the weekend and beyond, some of the models are picking up on a strong storm for the Austrian Alps from Sunday to Monday. The model agreement isn’t there just yet, but it’s something to watch.
