Showers Continue, Another Storm Possible Next Weekend
Summary
Snow showers from the departing storm continue on Monday and into Tuesday. We’ll dry out for the middle of the week and a weak storm is forecast around Thursday/Friday. A stronger storm is possible toward the end of next weekend.
Short Term Forecast
Snow showers will continue over the next two days, primarily in the eastern Alps, as our latest system departs the region. Additional accumulations will be minor but this storm delivered much-needed snow for the southern Alps and Pyrenees. Additional snow through Tuesday from the European model is below.
The middle of the week looks quiet as ridging briefly takes hold, with a warming trend as well.
Later in the week, a system will move through the northern Alps, bringing a period of light to moderate snow. Right now, this looks like a 10 - 20 cm event from Thursday night through Saturday, favoring the northern Alps from France through Austria. Temperatures look to be on the warmer side with this one.
Not much of a break is expected before another storm takes aim for the Alps. It’s a bit early to get into the details but the models do agree on some more action starting around Sunday. Most of the models favor the eastern Alps at this time, but not all of them, and it’s still a week out. While this storm looks larger than the Thursday to Saturday system, the models aren’t showing anything too big. We’ll iron out the details in the coming days.
Extended Forecast
I’m not seeing anything overly exciting in the long range. Around the 24th to the 25th the models are showing a potentially favorable pattern for some larger storms to reach the Alps. This is a long way out and although there’s some agreement in the models, they’re not all showing the exact same scenario. Something to watch, for now.
