Showers > Small Storm > Big Storm

Summary

Several rounds of snow are on tap over the next ten days with each one stronger than the last. Some snow showers are possible later this week, a small storm will bring moderate snow to close out the weekend, and a stronger storm is on the menu later next week.

Short Term Forecast

The first round of snow comes Friday into Saturday and will bring snow showers with minimal accumulations mostly in the northern Alps.

Another weak storm moves through the region from a Sunday to Monday, bringing 5 - 15 cms from northern France through Austria.

Most of my attention, however, is on the potential storm for the latter part of next week. The ensemble and now deterministic models have been consistent in bringing a strong storm to the Alps around the 22nd/23rd.

There aren’t many changes today, except for the European model showing this storm tracking farther north before reaching the Alps. This would bring much less snow to the region.

Below you can see the changes in the upper-level setup for next week between the Tuesday night and Wednesday night runs from the European model. The more recent run Wednesday night has the storm considerably farther north.

We’re over a week out, and most models still bring a strong storm into the Alps, so this is an outlier for now. We will have to watch the upper-level pattern developments over the next few days to see if this model is picking up on something before the rest, or just working through some fluctuations in the long range.

Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!
