Showers Continue, Better Storm Possible Later This Month

Summary

Rain and snow showers remain on track for much of the next week. For the last week of March, a pattern change is expected that could bring more active weather into the region. A series of storms is possible to end the month of March and to start April.

Short Term Forecast

Once again there aren't a whole lot of changes in today's forecast. We'll have three rounds of rain/snow showers before some stronger storms begin to move through central Europe.

The showery periods will occur from Saturday to Sunday morning, Sunday night to Tuesday, and Thursday morning through Thursday evening. Temperatures will be above normal during this period and snow levels will be high, with the showers falling as rain at mid-mountain and below for most areas.

The ridge responsible for the warm air pouring into the region will start to weaken later next week. This will allow for a stronger storm to approach the Alps from the northwest next weekend. The deterministic and ensemble models are in good agreement for a stronger storm during this time.

Below you can see the storm approaching from the northwest.

This storm track favors the northern Alps, but we need some more time to fine-tune the details. The latest guidance has this storm bringing around 20 - 40 cms through Monday of the following week.

Extended Forecast

Looking even farther out into the last few days of March, active weather is expected to continue. The models continue to show an area of low-pressure setting up to the west of the Alps and sticking around for several days. This would direct Atlantic moisture and warm air into the region. This type of setup has the potential to bring a lot of high-elevation snow to the western Alps, so it will need to be closely monitored.
