Rounds of Showers for the Northern Alps

Summary

A ridge over Spain has pushed the storm track shifts this week, bringing periods of showers. The long-range models remain consistent with a more active pattern developing later this month.

Short Term Forecast

Several rounds of showers will move through the Alps over the next ten days. Ridging over southern Europe will keep any major storms from reaching the Alps and Pyrenees during this time.

Each showery period will bring up to 15 cms in the northern Alps from France to Austria. There are three rounds of showers possible in the next ten days, from Saturday to Sunday, Sunday to Tuesday, and Thursday to Friday.

Below is an early look at potential snow totals for all of these showery periods combined.

Overall, temperatures will be warm for these events, resulting in high-elevation snow showers with rain showers down low.

Extended Forecast

The ridge should stick around for quite some time, limiting any major storms from impacting central Europe. The models still show an upper-level area of low pressure developing northwest of the Alps later this month. This could bring more storms back to the region.
