Northern Alps Showers

Summary

The next week to ten days will feature snow showers for the northern Alps, with only modest accumulations expected. The ridge over Spain will send most storms north of the Alps and Pyrenees. A pattern change is possible the last week of the month.

Short Term Forecast

Just a quick post today, as the forecast hasn’t changed much and we’re only looking at some shower activity over the next week or more.

The primary periods for the rain and snow showers will be from Saturday to Sunday and Sunday night to Monday. Each of these events has the potential to bring 5 - 20 cms across the northern Alps from France to Austria.

Below is the total snow forecast through Tuesday of next week showing the accumulation from both rounds of showers.

In between these showers, temperatures will be warm courtesy of the ridge over Spain. Southwest winds will transport warm air into central Europe during this time.

The ensemble models continue to show a pattern change around the 25th of March. The consistency in the models is promising, but it's still nearly two weeks away. That looks like the next chance for a more significant storm.
