High-Elevation Snow Showers This Week

Summary

High-elevation snow showers will continue through part of this week, with a stronger storm possible on Friday. A more significant pattern change with the potential for significant snow is likely later in the month.

Short Term Forecast

Two more rounds of rain and snow showers are expected this week ahead of a stronger storm over the weekend. The next round of showers will occur from Sunday evening through Tuesday, followed by another round from Thursday evening through Friday afternoon.

The expected snow for each of these rounds of showers is shown below. See the dates for timing.

Without much of a break, snow will intensify as the next storm arrives on Friday afternoon. This storm will bring several waves of snow through the early part of next week. This storm will feature some of the coldest air we've seen in a while in the northern Alps, resulting in low snow levels, generally in the 600 - 900 m range after the passage of the cold front.

Below is an early look at snow totals for this event, which will also favor the northern Alps.

Extended Forecast

The models continue to show a pattern change during the last week of the month, with a low-pressure system developing in the Atlantic off the coast of Spain. As this storm moves inland, precipitation will return to the Alps. It's still too early for details, but this should bring additional chances for snow.
