More Chances for Snow This Week
Summary
After a mostly quiet Tuesday, the next storm moves in on Tuesday night. Moderate to heavy snow will fall in the western Alps through Thursday. Another storm is expected this weekend, potentially followed by a third early next week. The southern Alps should benefit most from these storms, but the northern and western Alps will also see some snow.
Short Term Forecast
The Retour d'est has ended as the upper-level low has weakened and begun moving east. Starting tonight, a low from the west will merge with a low from the north to give us our next weather maker. The southern piece will bring a period of south-southwest/southwest winds, which will shift more westerly as it combines with the northern piece. This will bring moderate to heavy snow to the southern French Alps and then the northern/western Alps through Thursday.
The biggest snow totals will be in parts of the French Alps, decreasing to the east.
Friday and most of Saturday should be dry before the next system arrives this weekend. A broad upper-level low will develop in the northeast Atlantic, sending multiple waves toward the Alps. The impacts will depend on how far south the storm track gets, but multiple rounds of heavy snow are possible during this setup.
Extended Forecast
This upper-level low in the northeast Atlantic may keep sending waves southeast toward the Alps through the end of next week or perhaps longer before it finally weakens and departs the region. This would bring additional chances for snow but it's still early to lock in this pattern.
My next post will be on Wednesday.
