Stay-at-home order in effect in Idaho; weather update
Summary
Coronavirus update: A statewide stay-at-home order is in effect statewide in Idaho. All Idaho ski areas are closed for the season. Backcountry skiing/riding is discouraged statewide to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). See more details in announcements. Weather: A new snow storm system approached Idaho overnight, bringing several inches of new snow to the Northern Idaho region. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Idaho Panhandle. Three to 7 inches of new snow are expected today with high temperatures in the low 30s. Very high winds are associated with the storm rolling through, with gusts in the mid-40s possible. Damage to trees and power outages could be possible. The storm system is approaching the West Central Mountains and Southern Idaho on Monday as well bringing substantial snow, 2-5 inches, during the day. More snow is forecast Monday night-Wednesday in all locations.
Short Term Forecast
Snow totals forecast on Monday in Idaho. Heavy winds are predicted in the Northern Idaho region as well.
The 5-day Open Snow forecast (map below) is calling for slightly more than a foot of snow through Friday in Northern Idaho and the West Central Mountains. 7-10 inches are expected in the Sun Valley region and Boise Mountains. About 6 inches of snow are expected south of the Snake River.
Unstable weather conditions are forecast throughout this week, particularly in Northern Idaho. There's a chance of snow every day through Sunday.
A slight break in storm systems will occur in Southern Idaho Wednesday night-Friday. Another storm system comes in Friday night, bringing a 20-30 percent chance of snow through Sunday.
Extended Forecast
Eight to 14-day NOAA forecast maps show the possibility of drying out in the 2nd week of April, at least in Northern Idaho, but mostly winter-like conditions are prevailing through what would have been the final weeks of the ski season.
Below-normal precipitation is expected through April 12 in Northern Idaho while Southern Idaho could have normal or above-normal precipitation.
Normal to below-normal precipitation is forecast in Idaho through April 12.
Announcements
Please follow Governor Little's "Stay at Home" order issued statewide on Wednesday, March 25th. The order calls on Idaho residents to stay at home for 21 days. The number of coronavirus cases in Idaho is continuing to increase.
The Idaho Community Foundation, in partnership with United Ways of Idaho and the Idaho Nonprofit Center, has created a COVID-19 Response Fund for Idaho.
Backcountry skiing at Idaho ski areas is strongly discouraged.
Local community leaders and first responders request that people not to come to their mountain communities to chase powder. If you do want to get out and enjoy the new snow, please stay close to home and be extra responsible and cautious so that you’re safe and do not cause a burden to healthcare workers.
