Lookout gets 7" bonus *pow* Sat, Sun/Mon storm to bring 4-10"

Summary

A light snow storm brought 2-3" to Schweitzer and Silver on Saturday, and Lookout skiers/riders got a 7" bonus *pow* day. Forecasts are holding steady for the next storm coming Sat PM/Sun for 5-10" of snow at Bogus Basin, Brundage, Tamarack, Sun Valley, Pomerelle and Pebble Creek, while N. Idaho ski areas are expected to get 2-6". Statewide refresher. The storm comes in with a favorable SW flow.

Short Term Forecast

2" of fresh snow so far at Schweitzer, and there should be another 3-5" by Sunday EOD. (photo courtesy Schweitzer Mountain Resort).

There will be two waves of storms coming - the first will move through Idaho on Saturday night/Sunday morning, bringing heavy snow and some wind during the ski day on Sunday, and then a second dose will occur Sunday night/Monday.

In N. Idaho, the main event will be Saturday night/Sunday, with a max of 2-5" forecast at Schweitzer and Silver by EOD Sunday. Lookout could get slightly more with the second dose Sunday night for a cumulative 3-6" by EOD Monday. Snow levels look good, even though day time temps will be nudging freezing at Silver and Lookout on Sunday during the day.

In Central and Southern Idaho, the main brunt of the storm will hit starting early Sunday morning and it'll snow hard during the day. 90-100% chance of snow in the region. With the SW flow, snow quantities are forecast to be slightly deeper at Bogus Basin in the Boise Mountains, with 4-8" to fall during the day Sunday, and another 1-2" to come Sunday night. Brundage has a very similar scenario of 3-7" during the day Sunday, and another 1-3" Sunday night. Tamarack is expected to get slightly less in the 3-5" range by EOD Sunday. With the SW flow, Tamarack could potentially get more than Brundage. We shall see.

Forecasts for Soldier Mountain and Sun Valley also are in the 3-5" range on Sunday.

It could be one heck of a *pow* day at Pomerelle on Monday morning, as the storms are expected to hit the high peaks south of the Snake River a bit later with the most moisture. 2-4" is forecast during the day Sunday, but 7-9" is expected Sunday night. And another 1-2" during the day Monday, for a total of 10-15" cumulative by Tuesday.

Pebble is checking in a 4-8" by Sunday EOD; 2-6" at Kelly Canyon.

No matter what, the Sunday storm cycle will refresh Idaho slopes with a significant dose of snow. Great to see the whole state getting in on the goods!

Extended Forecast

High pressure is forecast to slide into place over the top of Idaho and the Northern Rockies by the middle of next week. That will block most chances of moisture in Southern Idaho.

However, there's a small lobe of Low pressure dropping down into the Idaho Panhandle and Northcentral Idaho by Wednesday of next week, bringing a solid chance of snow, 6-8" forecast right now.

The Wednesday storm system may bring a dusting to 3-4" in Central and Southern Idaho.

Thanks for reading! My next forecast will be on Monday, Feb. 6
