Impressive.

Summary

Friday night delivered, with some impressive snow totals being reported so far Saturday morning, including some over a foot in northern Wisconsin! Saturday will bring lingering snow in the eastern half of the Midwest, with windy conditions in the AM and subsiding winds during the day.

Short Term Forecast

Snow Reports:

Well...that was quite the event Friday night! Thunderstorms quickly transitioned to snow from the Twin Cities east into Wisconsin and the UP.

Snow reports so far Saturday AM:

  • The north shore of Lake Superior:
    • Dusting to 1" reported so far
  • UP:
    • 1-2" being reported near Ironwood
    • Dusting in the Keweenaw Peninsula (Bohemia)
    • 8-15" reported near Ski Brule and Pine Mtn
    • 5-8" near Marquette Mtn
  • Twin Cities:
    • 4-7" being reported near Wild and Trollhaugen so far
    • 5-8" being reported near Buck Hill and Welch Village
    • As more reports trickle in these early reports could be on the low end as the Twin Cities hit the optimistic totals!
  • Traverse City:
    • Mainly rain overnight
  • Granite Peak reporting 4" of wet/thick snow and still snowing as of 7 am CDT
    • The heaviest band of snow remained just north of Granite peak with some 11-15" totals reported about 50 miles north

Saturday:

We'll see the remaining area of light snow slide southeast across the Midwest on Saturday, with only light accumulations expected. The morning will feature some very windy conditions with subsiding winds throughout the day from west to east.

It looks like the Traverse City resorts stayed mainly rain and the bust potential for locations like Nub's Nob ended up being an accurate scenario based on the webcam this morning showing very little snow.

There are no reports from the area but based on webcams near Searchmont it looks like snow started in the middle of the night and is still snowing this morning around 7 am EDT. The snow likely continues for Searchmont before tapering off with a couple more inches of snow possible.

HRRR forecast precipitation types for Saturday

Sunday:

Models have flipped back towards some snow for the Lake Superior region, with milder temperatures in the southern half of the Midwest. Snowfall amounts as of now look to be in the dusting to 3" range followed by highs in the upper 30s and 40s for resorts still spinning the lifts on Sunday. The widespread 50s are more likely to remain in the southern half of the Midwest where the resorts have closed for the season.

ECMWF forecast precipitation types for Sunday
