Storm Train Targets California

Summary

North continues to be best as storms target the Canadian destinations into 2021. Destinations in the Intermountain West will continue to ski well thanks to recent snow and a low sun angle. California will enter the bullseye for the week of January 4th. Multiple FEET could be in-store.

Grand Targhee and Jackson Hole in Wyoming, along with Aspen Snowmass in Colorado, grabbed the highest totals over the past 5 days.

Here was the scene at Aspen Highlands on Tuesday, December 29th.

I can confirm first-hand that the snow was deep and very fluffy!

For the days ahead, it will be quiet for most locations in the western United States outside of light snow for Squaw Alpine on Wednesday night.

To find the deepest snow, we'll have to once again look north to Canada as Revelstoke, along with the SkiBig3 destinations, will be right in the catcher's mitt.

As we flip the calendar into 2021 and enter the first week of January, our focus will shift to Squaw Alpine, along with Mammoth in central California, for a very healthy storm cycle. Multiple storms starting Monday, January 4th will likely bring FEET of snow to the Tahoe resorts, and solid totals for Mammoth.

"The storms are lined up for next week. The Monday storm looks like it could clear out Monday night. Then possibly a break at least through Tuesday morning. The next storm looks like it could move in between Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday evening. This storm could have a decent AR (atmospheric river) associated with it that points at the Sierra ... this could be a prolonged storm through Wednesday night as the main low-pressure center is forecast to track into California behind the front Wednesday." - Tahoe Daily Snow

If you love snow, there's nothing better than watching snow totals climb in the Sierra of California. Bryan Allegretto does a fantastic job so keep an eye on the Tahoe Daily Snow.

Extended Forecast

For the rest of next week and into the middle of January, a very active storm track will remain locked onto the western US. Jackson Hole could do really well, along with Alta/Snowbird in Utah.

The graphic below details the temperature compared to average across the United States and does a good job of depicting the area of storminess throughout the Western US.

As always, stay up-to-date with our team of local forecasters. They will provide you with excellent local analysis and really help you dial in the details with updates every morning.
