Spring conditions for the weekend

Summary

Warm temperatures, partially clearing skies, and soft snow are in store for today. Temperatures become a bit cooler on Sunday but still allow snow to soften up. Rain showers may push into the region during the evening hours, however, most of the day should remain dry. Rain continues through Monday and colder temperatures move in by Tuesday. Dry conditions persist through the second half of Tuesday through most of Wednesday before another storm system moves in by the end of next week, bringing mostly rain.

Short Term Forecast

Good morning, New Englanders! Today is shaping up to be a fantastic spring day on the hill with warm temperatures and soft snow. Rain showers that progressed over the region during the overnight hours have cleared northern New Hampshire and western Maine, and should completely taper off in southern Vermont and southern New Hampshire by the mid-morning hours. A stray rain shower or two may affect the northern tier during the mid-morning hours, however, showers will be short lived and light. Temperatures today are expected to be in the mid 50s to near 60 across the northern tier while temperatures will be in the low-mid 60s in southern New England. Mostly cloudy skies will linger for the first half of the day and will begin to break as we push through the afternoon hours, allowing sunshine to beam down and induce some serious goggle tanning conditions.

Temperatures will be a bit cooler on Sunday as temperatures drop overnight and cloud cover increases by the mid-morning hours, limiting the amount of heating from the sun. Conditions will remain dry for the majority of the day, however, an approaching storm will begin to bring precipitation into the region by the early evening hours. Light rain showers may be possible in northern Vermont and northern New Hampshire, with a chance for a shower in the mountains of southern Vermont. Otherwise, temperatures are expected to be in the mid-upper 40s across northern New England and mid-upper 50s in the southern half of the region. Get out there and enjoy the soft snow while you can… it won’t be around for much longer.

Extended Forecast

Rain continues into Monday and becomes heavier. Temperatures on the mountain will max out in the lower-mid 50s on Monday until flow becomes northwesterly later in the day, bringing below-freezing temperatures back into New England. By Monday evening, any lingering moisture will change over to snow for northern New England. Light snow showers could continue through part of Tuesday for northernmost resorts:

Winds on Tuesday will likely be a bit gusty (gusts upwards of 40-50 mph) with high temperatures in the lower-mid 30s at summit elevations. Conditions remain mostly dry through the latter half of Tuesday into Wednesday before the next storm system approaches our region. Light rain showers are possible for eastern New York, southern Vermont, southern New Hampshire, and western Massachusetts as early as Wednesday evening, but a more robust swath of precipitation will arrive on Thursday. A warm front pushes into New England around this time, bringing mostly rain showers. The latest runs of the Euro and the GFS suggest that the center of the storm will make a bit of a slow approach to New England, resulting in a prolonged period of rain lasting through Friday and into the weekend. There is a chance for some mixing with snow in the mountains on Thursday, but overall this will be a rain event.

We will be back with more updates on next week’s forecast on Monday. Monday will be our last post of the 2018-2019 season.
