Nor'easter On The Way!

Summary

A Nor'easter will bring a wintry mix to the slopes, but snow is expected toward the end! The week is mostly clear as another storm sets up for Friday.

Short Term Forecast

Happy Monday everyone! Currently we’re looking at increasingly cloudy skies across New England, and temperatures hovering in the lower 20s for the higher elevations. Snow packs are still dense, but we’ve heard reports of great November skiing so far on the slopes. Here’s a look at Killington right now:

A Nor’easter is set to travel up the coast, and produce a wintry storm for New England. Here’s the exact details:

When: Currently, the storm is strengthening just off the east coast. The system will travel north to produce the first bout of precipitation around 8 PM tonight. The low will meander east of Maine into Tuesday, producing showers until Tuesday afternoon.

Where: New Hampshire and Maine will get most of the precipitation to start. As the low moves north of Maine, wrap around precipitation will give VT and NH a shot of snow on Tuesday.

Precipitation Type: These early season storms are always tricky to forecast what kind of frozen precipitation will fall. So be aware that there is some uncertainty as to when this flips over to snow. At the start of the storm, the lower atmosphere will edge above freezing. This will produce a Wintry Mix of snow, sleet, and rain for the slopes into early Tuesday morning. As the storm progresses expect cooler temperatures to move into the region. This will allow snowfall in the higher elevations Tuesday morning, and for the rest of the storm’s duration.

Accumulations: Expect 3-6” on the slopes once the storm ends. If this were all snow, those totals would be higher. That mix in the beginning though drives the accumulations down a bit.

Here’s a look at the model:

Extended Forecast

High pressure builds following the storm. Wednesday will be a great day to hit the slopes following all that new powder! In fact if there were any day we recommend to get out there, Wednesday is the clear favorite for the week.

Wednesday night has the chance to produce some weak snow showers for the northern peaks. These accumulations would be a modest 1-2”. If you can't make it out Wednesday, Thursday would be your second best shot at fresh snow.

Looking toward the end of the work week, we have another system tracking to impact the Northeast on Friday. Right now this system is looking like mostly rain, with some frozen precipitation mixed in. The exact details of the timing and precipitation type are up in the air, so check back over the next few days for updates!

We had a viewer send some wonderful aerial shots of Okemo, Stratton, and Bromley on 11/11. They look incredible, and we think its a perfect way to end the forecast today. Thank you Jeff Lennox for the shots!

Happy Skiing!
