A warm week, but colder weather expected this weekend

Summary

Warmer weather and some rain are likely this week, but colder weather and increased odds for more snow return this weekend.

Short Term Forecast

Conditions at resorts are about as good as you'll find this season (or any season) after the weekend storm with plenty of packed powder, moguls, and groomers. Some resorts even managed 100% open terrain on the heels of two feet of fresh snow. The Mt. Mansfield snow stake depth is currently at 86" and now sits more than a foot above this date in an average season.

The week ahead is looking fairly wet across portions of New England. The ECMWF model forecast below highlights several rounds of (rain) showers with maybe a small potential for some snow on the back edge of the series by Friday. Fortunately, it doesn't look like a washout across the resorts with most of the heaviest stuff falling over eastern New England according to the latest model runs.

ECMWF model forecast animation through 8PM on Friday.

Temperatures will bounce between 30 and 40F on the slopes through Friday. With the warmer air mass and chance for rain, conditions may soften throughout the week, but the cloud cover will help stave off significant melting. All-in-all, not a terrible week, but a little wet.

Extended Forecast

Temperatures are forecast to drop back hard into the weekend and into next week as a decently cold air mass settles into the region. Our latest forecast models bring temperatures down into the 10s on Saturday and Sunday, and into the single digits next week at Killington. Overall, temperatures will likely run a good ~5 degrees below normal for the whole period next week.

ECMWF ensemble mean 2-meter temperature departure from climatology for the five day period next week 1-6 April.

The cooler temperatures will also come with increased odds of some additional snow across the region. Several of the ECMWF ensemble members have snow in the forecast with the best odds currently lining up for next Wednesday 3 April (give or take a day). Both the cooler temperatures and chance for additional snow will keep the skiing and riding going into April.

NEW: Snow Ratio Forecast

You can now get a good idea of the upcoming snow quality for the next storm via our new "Snow Ratio" forecast for any location in OpenSnow.

When we talk about snow quality, such as “light and fluffy” or “heavy and wet”, we are talking about the snow-to-liquid ratio. The higher the snow-to-liquid ratio, the lighter the snow quality, and vice-versa.

  1. Go to any location screen and tap the "Snow Summary" tab.
  2. Scroll down to the 5-day hourly or 10-day forecast section.
  3. View the 5-day hourly or daily "Snow Ratio" forecast for the next 10 days.

10:1 will be fun but will feel a little heavy. 15:1 will offer some faceshots and feel pretty light. 20:1 will be incredibly light, almost like skiing through nothing but air.

This new feature is currently available with the latest version of the OpenSnow iOS app installed (App Store > OpenSnow > Update) or on the OpenSnow website (OpenSnow.com). It will be available in the OpenSnow Android app soon.
