Mid-Winter Sunny Spell, Storms Return Weekend & Next Week

Summary

Aotearoa had brilliant weekend weather to end the School Holidays, with 5–10 cm of fresh snow in Canterbury. Fine conditions will continue under a large high, with cold nights ideal for snowmaking. Brisk winds will affect Mt Ruapehu until Thursday, and northwesterlies will build over the South Island.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Monday 21st to Friday 25th July

South Island ski fields will enjoy a string of fine, sunny days from Monday to Friday. Winds remain light early in the week, with southerlies in Canterbury and calm conditions in the Southern Lakes. From Wednesday, breezes shift northerly and strengthen, with northwest winds building by Thursday and Friday.

Extended Forecast

A front will bring rain, snow, and strong northwest winds to the lower South Island over the weekend. A powerful low will dominate next week, starting with warm northerlies and rain, then turning showery with snow and finishing with a cold southerly change bringing quality powder to low levels.
