Quiet and cool pattern this week

Summary

A Northern flow pattern continues during the week and temperatures remain relatively cool at most locations. Skies trend clearer towards later week and winds are mostly light at the ridgetop. During Friday a spring storm tracks towards SW Norway and sets up a nice refresh for Saturday morning. Cool spring skiing conditions are the name of the game this week.

Short Term Forecast

Wednesday

The northern flow pattern continues in Scandinavia and the weather is generally cool and freezing levels low. Northern Sweden can receive trace snow during the day as a weak occluded front tracks south. Dundret might get a dusting. The Western and SW Norwegian coast is generally sunny. Winds are generally light to moderate at ridgetop.

Thursday

The flow changes to a Northwestern pattern. A low-pressure system tracks SE along the SW coast of Norway but is a little too far off to the sea to bring any significant precipitation to the mountains. The coastal resorts in the SW can get trace snow above 500-600m during the day. Winds are generally light at ridgetop in most locations. A weak ridge over Scandinavia brings mostly clear skies and cool temps call for a good day out on skis!

No significant snow accumulations are expected on Wednesday or Thursday.

Friday

The northwest flow pattern continues and temperatures remain cool. Skies are mostly clear in Scandinavia and winds light to moderate at ridgetop. Towards the evening a cold front lands on the SW and W coast of Norway, bringing 5-10cm of snow by night to the SW coastal resorts above 600m, at the moment it looks like Stranda will be favored best for Friday's storm.

Saturday

A ridge of high pressure begins to set up over Western Scandinavia. Snow accumulation continues in the northern parts of SW Norway during morning and afternoon and snow quality trends lighter. However, winds pick up to moderate-strong levels at ridgetop. Aim to ski in the morning for the best conditions. A low-pressure system tracks North to the east of Finland, and winds pick up during the day to strong levels in Finland. Eastern Lapland resorts can get trace snow during the day.

Stranda is set up for a decent weekend as the NW flow delivers moisture and temperatures are sufficiently cool for snowfall:

Extended Forecast

The ensemble models seem to agree that a more Western flow pattern develops and temperatures would remain relatively cool towards the start of next week. However, there is disagreement between models about the timing of incoming storms at this time. At this time it looks like on Sunday or Monday a new storm might track towards the Western coast of Norway.

Thanks for reading Scandinavia Daily Snow. The next update will be on Saturday.
