Quiet second half of September looks likely
Summary
Fall-like temperature swings will continue over the next week. However, generally dry conditions look likely to continue thru the end of September and possibly into early October.
Short Term Forecast
Today (Wednesday, Sept 19) we have a dry cold front passing thru the area that is going to kick up winds again. Should be relatively warm today, but we will see a cool off of 10+ degrees for tomorrow. Then, we warm back up for a lovely weekend.
Next week, another trough will pass to our north and bring thru additional cooler air. A couple days ago it looked like there could be an outside shot that it brought significant snows to the Northern Rockies and a dusting to far northern Utah mountains, but that hope looks to be gone now as the moisture will be farther north and east. We will drop back down to the 50s/60s in the mountains and 70s in the valleys again to start the week.
So a few temperature swings, but otherwise a benign forecast.
Extended Forecast
Models have really settled on a highly amplified pattern to end the month of September and begin October. A huge ridge over the western half of the continent and large trough over the east.
That means that autumn will be arriving to the east while summer persists out west.
