Steamboat Daily Snow
By Joel Gratz, Founding Meteorologist Posted 10 months ago March 12, 2024
Moderate storm Wednesday and Thursday
Summary
A weak storm on Monday night delivered some flakes, and a stronger storm will bring more substantial accumulations from Wednesday to Thursday.
Update
Monday
Monday was dry, warm, and partly cloudy. On Monday night, a weak storm tracked across Colorado, and we only saw a brief period of snow and there was no measurable accumulation.
Tuesday
Tuesday will be dry, partly cloudy, and warm-ish with a high temperature in the low 30s. The morning scene is gorgeous with clearer skies above and low clouds in the valley.
Wednesday
The mid-week storm will be getting organized on Tuesday night and Wednesday, so I have low confidence in the snow forecast. A reasonable estimate is that we'll see a few inches of snow on Tuesday night and/or Wednesday morning, and then we could see another round of steadier snow on Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday evening. Total accumulation will likely be 3-8 inches with a mix of powder and variable conditions. Wednesday's high temperature will be in the 20s.
Thursday
On Thursday, the storm will strengthen and bring a wind from the east. This is the worst wind direction for Steamboat as it usually means no snow and gusty conditions which can slow or close some lifts/gondolas. I expect that the main story on Thursday will be gusty winds. The high temperature will be in the 20s.
Friday to Wednesday
From Friday, March 15 to Wednesday, March 20, I expect dry weather and mostly sunny skies (though there is a small chance that the upcoming storm will linger and bring snow showers and more clouds through the weekend). Daily high temperatures will be in the 30s.
Longer Range
All of the longer-range forecasts point toward snow returning, starting around Thursday, March 21, and continuing through the end of March. It's far too soon to figure out the details of the upcoming snowfall, but at least it's good to see that the data is pointing toward more snow before the end of the month.
My next update will be Wednesday morning.
