Midweek Troughs & Weekend Heat Waves...

Summary

Winds pick up on Monday as we go into a midweek cooldown. Then another heat wave is on tap by the weekend. Very slight chances for any precip from thunderstorms Wednesday - Thursday.

Update

We will continue our trend this week of cool-downs midweek and heatwaves by the weekends. We have a trough moving towards the West Coast with low pressure sitting along the coast through midweek.

trough

That will start with a slight cooldown starting Monday with highs around 80 degrees at lake level. Afternoon southwest winds will pick up with gusts of 20-30+ mph on the lake and 30-40+ mph over the mountain tops. That will bring some rougher lake water during the afternoon.

Midweek Cooldown:

The sunny skies and gusty afternoon winds continue Tuesday through Thursday, and the cooldown continues as well. Highs dropping into the 70s at lake level and 60s for the upper mountains, with 50s for the highest elevations.

You can always find detailed forecasts for hiking in the mountains on OpenSummit, as well as lake level forecasts for locations like Homewood High & Dry Marina.

With the low drawing up some moisture Wednesday - Thursday we may see a few afternoon thunderstorms pop up around the region. The chances look to be pretty low right now. The bad news is the increasing fire danger with the dry weather and gusty afternoon winds, and the moisture-starved thunderstorms could cause some lighting that could spark fires.

Weekend Heat Wave:

The area of low pressure along the West Coast weakens by the end of the week as strong high pressure builds in over the West.

That will bring another warm-up with highs into the 80s at lake level through the weekend and into early next week. The winds are also expected to be lighter starting Thursday into the weekend. This will be a hot and dry pattern with highs near 100 in Reno and no chances to cool down outdoors during the day unless you go for a swim or hike the high elevations.

Over the next 7 days the only chance for precip will be from the slight chance for afternoon thunderstorms midweek, but overall expecting another dry week for much of California and Nevada.

The long-range forecast models show the ridge possibly shifting off the West Coast with time which may at least ease the heatwave some.

I will continue to post weekly updates on Mondays throughout the summer. Be sure to be using OpenSummit for your summer mountain weather. It is especially helpful with the colder temperatures and stronger winds normally seen when hiking the higher elevations.

We have lots of new location points and map overlays including smoke and lightning maps, as well as offline maps when you're out of range. We will be adding more features throughout the summer!

Stay tuned...BA
